Our pupils

Pentland Field School caters for the educational needs of children and young adults aged 4-19 with a range of learning disabilities including those who may be autistic and those who have physical or sensory needs.

Our pupils are at the core of all we do

As a school, we are committed to children's learning by:

  • Providing teaching and learning of high quality

  • Providing children and young people with a broad and balanced curriculum appropriate to their needs and abilities

  • Providing a curriculum with a clear direction, where learning in each key stage builds upon what has gone before, so that pupils are extended, challenged, and prepared for the next phase of their lives when they leave Pentland

We commit to creating a safe and secure environment.
We teach pupils to look after themselves and others by:

  • Creating a climate and culture where pupils are treated with respect and dignity, and where they are expected to follow this model by doing the same

  • Listening to our pupils and acknowledging their voice

  • Helping pupils make choices and decisions where they can

  • Encouraging children and young people to be as independent as they are able

We believe that pupils grow academically when they are given broadening and enriching opportunities. These include:

  • School Council

  • Extra-Curricular Activities

    – after school club, late night youth club, Saturday club and holiday provision

  • Sporting opportunities

    – by linking with community based sports coaches

  • Work experience

  • Educational trips

    – visits in the community and further afield

Sharing Pupil Progress

Staff plan carefully with the learning needs of pupils in mind.

Staff know about targets identified for progress in Annual Review and EHCP planning, and integrate this so that pupils are able to make progress on these skills.

We share pupil progress with families regularly and informally, through conversations on the gate, phone conversations, and ClassDojo, an online platform that allows for communication and information sharing directly between parents and your child’s class team.

We also meet with families formally through the year:

Autumn Term: Meet the teacher, information sharing about the year

Autumn Term: sharing targets with families, and early progress

Autumn Term: (Year 14 only): Annual Review

Spring Term: (YR to Y13: Annual Review

Summer Term: end of year report celebrating pupil progress
